Region of high latitude almost devoid of
trees, resulting from the presence of
permafrost. The vegetation consists mostly of
grasses, sedges, heather, mosses, and
lichens. Tundra stretches in a continous belt
across N North America and Eurasia. The term,
formerly applied to part of N Russia, is now
used for all such regions.
